Hello, strangers!

Little House in the Trees
oil on canvas, custom order
9 x 12"

I can't believe it's been nearly a month since I've posted. Since my two Holiday shows I haven't had much time for painting. I had these two custom orders to fill and once those were out the door it was *poof!* Holiday overdrive. Now that Christmas is over, I feel like I can share them with you without spoiling any surprises. I now feel like I have been in motion for too long. Time to settle in and get situated before welcoming the New Year.

Blue Clog

I love all shoes, but there's just something about clogs. Maybe because I'm a child of the 70's and they remind me of how I would tromp around the house in my mom's Dr. Scholls, Willie Nelson's "Stardust" playing the background.

Country Road

Finished! I am very happy with the way this one turned out. Whew. It encourages me to paint larger pieces more often. I like to paint all at once and only come back to a painting to add a few details here and there. No layering or glazing. Here, that meant bringing out some big brushes and working quickly. Luckily, the elements the customer ordered were things I love to paint. She wanted something to remember Davis by when she returns to Japan. I hope I give that to her.

In response to a comment yesterday (hi Lisa!) I wanted to share a few words about custom pieces. Up until last Fall, I just didn't do them. The stress of somehow conveying an emotional connection to something or someplace that wasn't MY connection was just too hard. I now do them on a case-by-case basis with lots of communication beforehand, especially for landscapes. Shoes, of course, are always welcome. I choose to not "repaint" pieces I've already done. The convergence of mood, strokes, and colors happens once. It can't be recreated easily. Pumping out the same painting isn't what I'm interested in. (Although getting paid for it is always tempting..but that's another blog post in itself!) The uniqueness, the moment--that's what I love about art. With every painting I've sold, I remember where I was and how I felt when I painted it. For me it's a serendipitous, shooting star kind of moment. The moment passes, but the art remains--whether it's a little shoe, a branch, or a sunset. To be able to share that moment with others is what makes it truly fantastic.

On the Easel

Working on a big 16 x 20" commission piece this morning. Sunset, country road, power poles..all my favorites to paint. I'm trying to keep the colors in harmony but not too pastel. I think adding the deep greens and browns will help balance it out. Right now it's verging on bad motel art from the 80's.

Red Boot

Another custom order finished! I have had the actual boot keeping me company on my desk for over a month now. So cheery and well-loved. Two little girls wore these boots--their feet can't stay small forever, but hopefully this painting will be the next best thing.

Baby's Red Shoes

A custom order I finished up today. The sweet baby feet that filled these shoes are going off to college this Fall. I get choked up just thinking about it!
