Billowing Cloud

Finally finished up this one yesterday. We have remained cloudless for this winter--no rain and hardly any fog. Strangely still and dry. Fingers crossed it bodes well for a wet Spring.

Sunflower Field

I am missing the fields full of sunflowers now that winter has arrived. There is something magical about living somewhere where you can tell what month it is by what's growing (or not) in the fields. When your dinner conversation involves "they harvested the tomatoes today" or "the sunflowers are now gone", you feel a connection even if you're not actually farming the land. For me, it makes the passing of time less jarring..more fluid. A continuum.

Converge

That point where it all comes together. Off in the distance. You can't really see it but you trust that it's there.

Marsh, Winter

Up and running with my new computer. Still making adjustments and getting my feet wet--colors look different and everything seems HUGE. I have to say this Mac thing is pretty awesome. I did a series of three little landscapes on wood blocks this weekend. This one had an olive green underpainting which gave it a toned-down Old World palette feel. I like!

Rice Fields

Right now it's harvest time, but I love painting the little shoots of Spring. The green meandering carpet almost glows.

Storm Lifting

I had fun painting the sky on this one. That moment when the rain stops, the clouds lift and the sun breaks through.

A little different...

Hi there. I've started doing a few little paintings in watercolor over the past month. It's great practice for painting with fresh, un-muddied strokes. Plus they dry in a jiffy! I'll share them with you here every Wednesday. Thank you for stopping by!

In Shadows

Yes, another road leading off into the horizon. Surrounded by fields and falling-down fences. I love our Valley landscape.

Tumbleweeds in Training

What do you do when stuck in a car for 8 hours driving back from Southern California? If you're me, you take pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. I happen to love power lines and tumbleweed bushes, so it's all good. I enjoyed painting this in a vertical format to emphasize the sky. Plus, it may be the perfect fit for a special spot in someone's home.

Down the Road

A little one I managed to whip out today. I enjoyed painting the perspective and the end of summer colors that make me think maybe, just maybe Fall is coming.

Blown

The wind was almost unbearable last week. Zipping through your head and eye sockets, making you feel disoriented and crispy. The air was almost fuzzy and white from all the pollen and dust, something I tried to carry over into my painting. Aaaaah--choo. I'm happy with the movement!

Shady Oaks

I love oak trees because no two are ever alike. They grow in such crazy ways--which makes painting them fun. Lots of shadows, strange low-lying branches. I'd like to crawl under this one and take a nap. That's the kind of week it's been. Happy Friday!

I really wanted to get that mustard to pop, but the colors ended up a little more muted that I like. That yellow can be tricky! Sorry I've fallen behind on my Unlaced Postcards. I promise to catch up next week! I have six more on this first round and then I will take a little break before the next round.

Happy Easter!

Spot of Sunshine

From mini-hurricane to mini-heat wave. In a week! I'll take it..as long as we can get a few more days of 70's before summer. I painted this one on a black ground for contrast. Everything was dark except for this patch of wheat lit up through the clouds.

March Storm

We had some wet, wild weather last week! Sideways rain and gusty winds that seemed to make all the trees vibrate. Now just a few days later, my tulips are up and blooming.

On the Horizon

We always crave opposites, right? So while are getting enough rain to flood out all the poor earthworms, I was craving a late summer afternoon with still, hot, air and the gentle sound of dried grasses rubbing together. I thought maybe an orange underpainting would help it glow. I'm pretty happy with it!

Staredown

When it comes to staring contests between me and cows, the cows always win.

Honestly, I'm having a hard time with these cows.
I keep coming back to them, fiddling a bit here and there and still not thrilled with the results. It's frustrating when you know where you want to get but can't manage to find your way there.

Solo

I love that our town has firmly held on to its agricultural roots. Seeing these gentle giants around makes me happy. The smell doesn't bother me a bit, either.
